February 2024 President’s Message

With the New Year well-upon us and having passed the all-important 2-week mark, do we now find ourselves on the other side of our “resolutions?” on the other side of our “best intentions?”

Question: What is a New Year’s resolution?

Answer: Something that goes in one year and out the other.

All kidding aside, here at the beginning of 2024 we look forward to the opportunities that may be obvious, may lie hidden in our daily journeys. I have often been fascinated to later learn the significance, the “back story”, the history of something with which I earlier crossed paths while woefully unaware of the “larger story.”  Not a resolution. Rather a “Post-it” note to self:

The Newcomer’s Club well-fills the bill allowing us to meet new people, participate in new activities and explore all that is “new” in New Bern.  At our January meeting we welcomed a host of folks new to the area.   The format for our meeting changed to include the first ever “Newcomers 101” – an introduction and overview of the Club for new members.  We learned about the Visitor’s Center as a resource for exploring our new community.  We explored how the Club will benefit from each of us getting involved, getting connected in whatever way works best for individual interests and schedules. As is said, “What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year.”

Looking ahead to February in New Bern – theatre dramas and auditions, music concerts and Mardi Gras, Valentines Day and Super Bowl Sunday, and don’t forget our Activity Groups . . . always a full calendar. Try something new!

Join us at our next General Membership meeting, February 8, 2024.  Planning ahead – Newcomers 101 from 6:30 PM to 6:45 PM, followed by open social time with the formal meeting beginning at 7:00 PM.  Our guest speaker from the New Bern Historical Society will review the New Bern Civil War Battlefield Park.

See you there!

Bill Brettschneider, President
