Club President’s Message

NEWCOMERS CLUB OF NEW BERN

PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

April has certainly been an emotional month.  The loss of Joanne Orluk was keenly felt by all who were lucky enough to have known her.  Her impact will be forever felt in our community.  We are also dealing with the Great Lake Fire that, as of the time I’m writing this, is 40% contained.  Sadly, it is believed the fire was human caused.  We are, however, very fortunate to have so many dedicated firefighters working to contain and put out the fire.

At our last meeting we learned a lot about what we can expect from the roadwork on 70.  It seems there will be quite a few changes in the near future, but all for the better.  In May, we will hear from Emily Fritz, with Sound Rivers, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers through monitoring, advocacy, and environmental justice.  It promises to be an interesting presentation.

I hope to see you all at the meeting on May 11, which will be held at the Harrison Center, 311 Middle Street, New Bern.  The doors will open at 6:15 PM, for socializing, and the presentation will begin at 7:00 PM.

Besides the speaker, we have a couple of fun things planned for the meeting!

Activities Director Update

With the return of warmer weather, Newcomers Club activities are also starting to warm up.  I hope you were able to join us at the Wood Ducks baseball game on the 23rd.  It turned out to be a beautiful day to socialize and enjoy not just one game, but a double header to make up for the rained-out game on Saturday.

All our sports, games, wining, and dining activities continue to attract members.  Did you know that the Crafters will be learning macrame, Day Trippers will visit a local winery, and the RV group will be venturing to the Kentucky Derby (maybe we’ll see them on the screen at our Derby party!)?  And pay special attention to upcoming events for the Boating group, including a Pirate Cruise and a trip to the Ocracoke Music Festival in June and a sunset dinner cruise on the Crystal Coast Lady in August.

All current club members are eligible to attend any of these activities.  Check the Newcomers Club web page for details.  We hope to see you at one of our events soon.
