Club President’s Message
NEWCOMERS CLUB OF NEW BERN
PRESIDENT’S UPDATE
OCTOBER, 2022
Fall has arrived bringing in with it all that fall has to offer – cooler weather, pumpkin patches, fall festivals and knowing the holidays are just around the corner.
I hope you all have a chance to enjoy our wonderful city and all it has to offer at this time of year, including Mum Fest and Mum Feast as well as the Ghost Walk. New Bern has a full fall schedule and I encourage you to experience it. It’s perfect weather for outdoor activities!
Our Club is also bursting with activities just waiting for you! Day Trips has two new leaders (yay!), and they are busy planning some great outings. In addition, Dining Out had a lovely dinner at Saltwater Grill in September and will dine at Carolina Grille in October. Pickleball continues to be everyone’s favorite, and the Book Club fits the bill for many avid readers! This is just the tip of the activity “iceberg.” We have over 25 activities – which one is calling your name? Sign up online or at the general meeting!!
My best,
Joanne Orluk
NEXT MEETING:
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2022
7:00 P.M. (DOORS OPEN AT 6:30)
HARRISON CENTER (311 MIDDLE STREET, NEW BERN)
SPEAKER: LINDY CUMMINGS, RESEARCH HISTORIAN FROM TRYON PALACE
We are very excited to welcome Ms. Cummings as our guest. Tryon Palace is rich with history and is the most visited attraction in New Bern. It should be fascinating information. We hope you will be able to join us!!
DUES REMINDER:
Yearly membership dues of $15 per person were due July 1. If you have not paid your dues, you may do so at the October meeting, by mail, and soon on-line.
Alternatively, you may mail your dues to:
Newcomers Club of New Bern, P.O. Box 14140, New Bern, NC 28562
As of October 31, 2022, those who have not paid their dues will drop off of the membership list and all activity lists. Just a reminder . . . you may not participate in group activities unless your dues are current. Your support is greatly appreciated.
CHARITY PROJECTS:
Thanks to everyone who supports our 50/50 raffle at the general meetings. It adds a bit of excitement for the winner, who gets half of that evening’s proceeds. The Club gets the other half, a portion of which will be donated bi-monthly to a different local charity.
Our September/October charity recipient is the Food Bank CENC at New Bern. A donation of $100 will be made from the Newcomers Club.
Our November/December recipient will be RCS (Religious Community Services). In addition to a monetary donation, we will be having a food drive at our November general meeting to support RCS.
Thank you for supporting the 50/50 raffle, which is turn supports our community. Tickets are sold before the meeting and are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.
If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, please check out the list of organizations seeking volunteers on the tables at each general meeting. Getting involved is the quickest way to immerse yourself in your new community!!
UPCOMING DATES TO REMEMBER

Food Drive for RCS – At November General Meeting – Bring a non-perishable canned item(s) or boxed good(s)

Activity Director Update
October, 2022
As Joanne mentioned in her President’s note, our activities are bustling and continue to expand. We now have groups starting for photo walks, yoga, and boating. And we’re still looking for people who may be interested in quilting, model railroading, and bowling.
A special thank you to the several people who stepped up to lead up activities groups that had vacancies. We still need leaders for Dining In and Table Games—these groups will be disbanded if we’re not able to find new leaders.
In the past few weeks all of the groups have made an effort to update their pages on the Newcomers web site, so please check there for the latest on upcoming events. Fall is a busy time in New Bern, and our activities groups are taking full advantage of the opportunities—from kite festivals to Ghost Walk, along with all of the usual wining and dining and games and more.
We hope to see you at an activity soon.
Ellen Cioccio
Activities Coordinator
