The plaque in memory of former Newcomers Club of New Bern president Joanne Orluk has been installed on a memorial bench at Martin Marietta Park in New Bern.
The bench, located adjacent to the picnic structure on the right when you enter the park, has a lovely view of the water. The bench is sponsored by the Newcomers Club of New Bern in conjunction with members of the New Bern Ladies and the New Bern Women’s Club.
Joanne always made people feel welcome, and in many cases she was among the first friends newcomers made in New Bern. One person commented that Joanne always remembered her name, although they’d only met a few times. She is fondly remembered by neighbors, people she swam with at the Y, many members of the Newcomers and Women’s clubs and New Bern Ladies, and even a PA at the hospital who took care of Joanne and mentioned how nice her whole family was. Joanne, 64,  passed away Friday, April 14, 2023.
The impact Joanne had on New Bern and so many people here in just two short years is a testament to the wonderful person she was. We are honored to pay tribute to Joanne and create a permanent remembrance of her in New Bern.Â
