Newcomers Club President’s November Message

While RV travels had me miss the last general membership meeting, I trust everyone enjoyed the ghostly presence of our guest speakers. Recently concluded this past weekend, the annual Ghost Walk is always a highlight.

For any and all who participated, here’s hoping it was “fun” not “frightful” . . . as long as no one felt the dripping water from the cemetery portal!  With Mumfest the previous weekend, October is a good time in New Bern as the summer heat is passed and we embrace Fall. As the daylight hours shorten and the temps fall, get those rakes ready for the changing leaves soon to grace our landscape.

For my wife and I, our recent travels took us to Savannah, Ga.  I am always fascinated by the connections that can be made in this “small, small world.”  Cycling with a local club in Savannah, I met a man from my Maryland community of origin.  At our camp location, we crossed paths with some folks whose original home was in Annapolis, Md. Learning they wanted to relocate from Florida to a smaller town, provided us with the opportunity to introduce New Bern. Sharing our experience with emphasis on the Newcomers Club captured their imagination and interest in exploring our town for their new home.

Our Club is an excellent forum for “connecting”.  From our By-Laws: “The purpose of the Club is to welcome and bring together newcomers to the New Bern area in order that they may become acquainted with each other and the New Bern community. The Club promotes various activities that foster opportunities for social interaction among its members and their assimilation into the social and civic life of the community.” Let us know of any suggestions you have to strengthen the club and the services it provides in support of this objective.

Looking ahead:

Planning to attend the Holiday Party? Ticket sales are brisk, and still available. Get yours now. Plans are in place for representatives of the Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” to attend the party providing the opportunity for our support for this worthy initiative.

If still on your calendar, please remember to complete any membership renewals to ensure your access to the  many events planned by our activity group leaders.

Our upcoming speaker from the Department of Parks and Recreation will join us at our next general membership meeting, November 9, 2023. See you there!
