Club President’s Message

Dear Newcomers:

I hope everyone had an enjoyable spring and are now looking forward to May as we work our way toward the summer months and lots of great family time! Our May Members Meeting is especially important because the members present will vote on the candidates for each of the board positions to be filled.

The list of nominees for positions to be filled follows:

President, Joanne Orluk
Vice President, Peter Blackburn
Secretary, Carol DuBois
Treasurer, Marty Pagnozzi
Membership Director, Rick Magda
Activities Director, Ellen Cioccio
Social Co-Directors, Kathleen Petrill and Melissa Hess.
(The Communications Director, Dee Schmidt has agreed to serve one more term)

I will announce this slate at the May meeting and solicit any nominations from the floor. The general members present will then vote on the candidates and the candidates receiving the most votes will be declared elected and serve as the Newcomers Club of New Bern Board of Directors for the 22-23 FY.

Our Nominating Committee, chaired by Sandie Swigart, assisted by Cindy Harrington and Mary Dowd, did a terrific job of finding this terrific slate of volunteers to fill their respective positions on the board. Well Done! Please attend this meeting and take part in this democratic process to keep our club running smoothly.

Speaking of our May meeting; it will be held in The Harrison Center May 12, starting at 7:00 pm; doors open at 6:30pm. Our speaker will be Patrick Gallagher, Chief of Police for the New Bern Police Department in Eastern NC.

Prior to his appointment to chief on March 2, 2021, he was a Deputy Chief with the Virginia Beach Police Department. He joined the Virginia Beach Police Department on September 17, 1990 and retired after 30-plus years to join the New Bern Police Department. This is not only a great opportunity to hear from the Chief, but also to say thanks to a group of first responders who work hard to keep us safe on a daily basis.

The flyer and registration form for our Hawaiian Luau event can be found on the website Home Page/Special Announcements and Upcoming Activities area, and is scheduled for Friday, May 20, which will be held at the Taberna Country Club from 6:00 to 9:30pm. Heavy Hors D’oeuvres will be available, as well as a DJ to enhance the fun. Wear your best tropical attire; I’ll bet mine will be better than yours! 😊 The deadline for registration is May 10; hope to see you there!

Thanks to our VP, Lee Harrington, we have another great event coming in June you won’t want to miss either! (The flyer and registration form for the Down East Wood Ducks Day trip, Sunday, June 5 can be found on the website “Upcoming Activities” area.)  The DEWDs are a Minor League Baseball team of the Carolina League and are a owned and operated Single-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. They are located in Kinston and named for the wood duck, a local colorful waterfowl.

This is a first-class opportunity to see the DEWDs play the Charleston Rays from the best seats in the house while enjoying typical ballpark food and drink. We are sharing this event with our friends and neighbors from the Alumni Group and the deadline to sign up is May 27. I encourage you to join the fun and don’t wait too long to register. Go Ducks!

Finally, as always, I encourage each of you to use our website to see all of the activities we have available for you each month. Our Activity Leaders do a great job of providing additional ways to mix and mingle while getting better acquainted with our beautiful and historic city.

I look forward to seeing you at our May meeting and invite all our Activity Leaders to be there as well.

Here’s to a great month ahead!
